Duality of Security and Access

Located between the Seattle Public Library and the Federal Courthouse, the archive is a physical representation of private v public as well as security v access.

A solid, private, secure box protects the historic materials and resembles the urban fabric of Seattle: unapproachable and defensive.

A fluid form rises from the site and intersects the secure space. This asymmetrical and light structure becomes the public’s way of access to the Archive, and begins relating to the experience of the site and the users’ interaction with the Archive. The form bends to the influence of the Seattle Public Library, enhances the Federal Courthouse’s intimidating image, visually looks down Spring Street, and follows traffic flows of both auto and pedestrian around the site.

As the two intersect, it is a place for the public to physically unlock and receive the materials from storage, and then use above.
